Gifts from Gluskabe

Illustrated Lecture

Basket

According to legend, the Great Spirit created Gluskabe, who shaped the world of the Native People of Maine, teaching them about its resources and how they were to be respected and used. Gluskabe taught the people how to make tools and how to create all that was neededeverything from shelter and clothing to household implements and canoes. The material culture traditions that developed in the region centered on the forests, especially the various tree species. These wood based technologies evolved over thousands of years and after contact continued to change to meet the needs of non-native markets. Other traditions, such as the production of regalia were reserved for internal usage. It is these traditions that were central to the Native Peoples of Maine and continue as living traditions today...

Gretchen Faulkner of the Hudson Museum, Orono, will explain the cultural, historical, and economic significance of basket making for the Wabanaki people.
